Hope for the UIGEA Coalition

Congressman Barney Frank, a democrat from MA, has verified that he is thinking toward legislation that will repeal the UIGEA. Frank thinks the UIGEA is “preposterous.” Furthermore, Representatives Shelley Berkley, a democrat from NV, and Jon Porter, Republican from NV, are sponsoring bills that will require an 18-month study on online wagering, also backed by the American Gaming Association that serves as representation to the commercial casino industry. The study will likely show the regulations imposed on online gambling and the effectiveness of those laws to confirm that online gambling is in fact regulated. By the way, a name to take note of here is Shelley Berkley, who is on the forefront of the gaming industry issues.

The aim of most politicians and other UIGEA opponents is to limit the UIGEA to only include the ban of online sports betting; thus, deeming online poker and all other non-sports betting games as okay to play.

Bookie Pays Out Early on Obama Bets

Ireland’s biggest bookmaker, Paddy Power, is so sure that Obama will win the 2008 Presidential Election on November 4, that the bookmaker has already paid out more than $2 million to betters who backed Obama. The company claims the election is over. By the way, prior to the payout, McCain’s odds of winning were at 5-1, and Obama’s were favored at 1-9. So, a $10 bet on McCain could yield a $50 payout; a $10 bet on Obama will yield only $1.10.

Kentucky Attempts to Seize Gambling Domains

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear pushed a court order through that threatens to seize 141 domain names that are connected with online gaming sites such as PokerStars.com, FulTiltPoker.com, UltimateBet.com, and Doyslesroom.com, if they do not take measures to prohibit Kentucky gamblers from playing on their sites within 30 days.

At the hearing last week, the defense team of more than 10 attorneys argued that Kentucky does not have jurisdiction over these domains, and that Gov. Beshear’s lawsuit violates interstate commerce laws, as well as international ones. Because websites aren’t gambling devices, as state law defines them, the court didn’t follow due process. One lawyer explained to the court that those who operate these sites strictly abide by the laws put into place by their countries of residence, the websites are regulated and taxed by these countries, and furthermore, many of these countries are U.S. allies. They also argued that many of these companies are even traded publicly over stock exchange markets.

Gov. Beshears claims these sites are stealing from Kentucky. The $170 million loss that the governor claims Kentucky has lost comes straight from the pocket of Kentucky’s horse racing business. The last ruling on this case was Oct. 17 that denies a dismissal of the order. The main hearing is set for Nov. 17, in which the judge will decide to seize or not to seize. Just one state is not going to necessarily affect online gambling, but if other states follow, we may be even farther away from appealing the UIGEA.

Why Poker Players Should Not Do Rap Videos

An oldie but goodie: Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, and Layne Flack thought it would be a good idea to cameo in a rap video for a song titled, “All In,” a rap song about poker, by rappers ProHoeZak, Alexander Neal, Raw, and Holly Rae. Shot in the Rio Casino in Las Vegas and released back in 2007, this is classic professional poker players at their finest. I wonder how long it took these guys to memorize the lyrics they lip sync to. They may actually be more entertaining than the real rappers…

John McCain - Gambling Supporter

Apparently 2008 presidential nominee John McCain is an avid supporter of Indian tribe casinos across the United States. While gambling is illegal in a large majority of states, casinos throughout the country that are built and run by Native American tribes are exempt from these laws. In a New York Times article, Steve Light, a professor at the University of North Dakota and leading expert on Indian gambling is quoted to state that John McCain is “One of the founding fathers of Indian gaming.” McCain has served as chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee twice, and according to the same article, “Mr. McCain has done more than any other member of Congress to shape the laws governing America’s casinos.” Apparently McCain is a longtime friend of top executives at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, as he is an avid Craps player. McCain has been spotted frequenting many Indian tribal casinos, as well as Vegas casinos, despite the negative attention from the media that follows his monthly gambling binges.
