Aggressive players in poker often flourish because of the simple notion of betting and the game structure of most all poker games, what does this mean for the average player? Well all players will no matter what, have to deal with the overly aggressive players, those who call you on flops and raise before the flop over 10 times the big blind when in last position or even on the flop. What can you do against these aggravating players?
Interestingly enough, an option in one of these cases especially if you primarily play only cash games, could be to leave the table. It may seem like the way out, but if there is a player who’s style you just can’t get around you need to deal with it. If that means moving off the table and going to another after having lost a small amount its better than trying to wait out the overly aggressive player to leave a table and allow your bankroll to take the hit in the process. It simply isn’t worth it and don’t put yourself in a position to be facing off with an aggressive player who that will cause you more trouble than anything. Normally though you will get the aggressive streaks of playing in a lot of players from time to time, perhaps they have the confidence up or they are in the opposite situation, lost a lot of money and tilting. Make sure when you sit down at a table to understand the players there as fast as you can possibly manage and start to make notes on them. That’s a very important thing to start doing on players you play with, especially if you are not multi-boxing, is to just make a player note on as many as players you can. These notes should just be little things you notice with that player because after a while you will see some players again and some of these notes will help you pick up some easy hands or easy traps.
Now if you’re the aggressive player you have to be ready to buy in with the max amount of chips at the table, because this will, although a basic tool, help you tremendously. First off this allows you to bully up your opponents and have the money to put players between and their money and force them to make high priced decisions. With your larger stack you can also just force a lot players after the flop to have to put in a larger than average amount of cash just to keep going and force players to put their chips in the middle. Pre-flop raises are another method you can approach a hand with. You have to remember not to get carried away though. You don’t want to make stupid plays just in an attempt to scare off all the other players because after a while you won’t scare them or at all. You need to play smart but loose and with large chip moves when you do move. Now if the players at your table are taking your bait and start to fall into your traps and loose money to you they will probably leave don’t worry just keep up your strategy with the next player to sit down until you’re done.
Remember to stay focused especially when you’re the aggressor. You don’t need to just fall into being overly aggressive and loose a lot of money because your trying to bully too much.
